Kettles Yard

My final university project works on the basis of telling the story of Kettle’s Yard, and its creator Jim Ede. Attendance of young people going to museums and galleries was lowering each year, due to the consensus of them being overpriced and pretentious. Kettle’s Yard although not identifies as a museum but an ‘open house’, is both free and welcomes all, into a home like environment. Jim Ede originally created it with young people in mind.

Painting is the basis of my practise making playful and decorative pieces that are rooted in narrative. Creating individual pieces and surface patterns that lyrically tell a story. The main aim was to make prints that were factually correct, I researched deeply into the lives of the Edes reading articles and listening to extracts about the house. Learning about routines, stories and details that could be illustrated.

I worked with a specific colour palette adding a playful element to how Kettle’s Yard truthfully looks. Creating works that could be viewed in chronological order or as a stand alone print. This was the first project I felt confidence when observing the outcomes, feeling I’d found a sense of style which I could develop on to new projects.
